Gonzales, LA - The Southern University men's golf team got their first top finish of the 2007 season by winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference Presidential in which they hosted at Pelican Point golf courses in Gonzales, LA.

"We shot 290 the first day and knew in order to win we would have to do better the next day," said head coach Willie Williams. "We came back and shot a 293 but the other teams had bad days as well so we were able to pull out a victory. It wasn't our best day on the range and we know we need to improve in order to try and win the SWAC tournament."

Southern was led by sophomore Dustin Thompson. The right-hander shot a season best 70 and 70 for a two day total of 140 to finish two under par and a second place finish. Gregory Alex-Scott shot 71 on the first day and 72 on the second to finish with a 143 score and sixth place. Senior Patrick Phillips completed the tournament four over par with a 146 score and ended the Presidential in ninth place. Brette Maynard shot a 78 on the first day and a 76 on the second to total 154 for the tourney while Suhail Vally ended the two day event with a 160 total.

First place finish went to Raul Cortes of Jackson State who completed the tournament with a 138 score and four under par.

In women's action the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University took first place and their captain Georgette Rollie took home first place honors.
