LADY JAGUARS FINISH THIRD

Alexandria, LA – The Southern University Lady Jaguars ended the day one stroke shy of second place, to take third at the 2005 Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf Champonships.

“Anyone of the girls could have picked up the one stoke we needed to tie,” said head coach Willie Williams. “We really wanted the two strokes to finish in second place but with the wind and the way we hit the ball today it was our own fault.”

This marks the first time in three years Southern has lost the women’s golf championship. Jackson State University, who won it this year won it also in 2002.

“What can I say we are rebuilding,” Williams said. “We hit a few good balls but had to many bad breaks in the first day.”

Finishing seventh in tournament with a score of 166 and making the All-Tournament team was senior Danielle Sells. Finishing second in the tournament with a score of 160, three behind the tournament individual winner, was senior Josephine Ainley.

“We’re really proud for Josephine and Danielle,” Williams said. “They really worked hard.”

The Southern University men’s team didn’t have it easy in their second round match today as they had to fight 20-25 miles per hour winds that lasted all day.

“The wind gave everyone problems but we were able to pull thorugh it,” said Williams.

Sophomore Lee Njorge lead the men’s team with a score of 79. As a team they finish with a combined score of 425 to stand in fifth place after two days of competition. The Jaguars will take to the course again tomorrow, for final round action of the SWAC golf championship. Tee time is set for 9:00 a.m. Scores from the final day of womens action is listed below. Scores from the second day of men’s action were not avaiable.
