Oct. 4, 2006 Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University Jaguar golf team competed in two tournaments this past week and placed second in the 2006 Coca Cola Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Invitational. The event was held in Atlanta, GA September 27th - 29th. Two days later they travel to North Louisiana for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference competition. In the nine team Grambling Tiger Invitational the Jaguars finished 4th. "We have been playing well but ran into a rough spot in Monroe," said head coach Willie Williams. "We travel to Atlanta on Tuesday of last week and returned on Friday. We then left for Monroe on Saturday. Some of the guys were mentally tired because of midterms coming up so their play suffered a bit." Southern's freshman Alex Scott led the team during the Hall of Fame Classic, shooting a 70 on the first day and a 71 on the second to finish with a 141 and three under par. His score placed him in a three way tie for second place. Joining him was sophomore Dustin Thompson who shot a 71 and a 70. Senior Patrick Phillips shot a 71 and a 75 to finish two over par while freshman Brette Maynard ended with a 79 and a 73 for eight over par. Junior Romer Alcala completed the event with a 78 and an 86 to end 20 over par. A day later the Blue and Gold traveled to Monroe, LA for the Grambling Tiger Invitational. Leading the Jags was Brette Maynard who had a good day on the links as he shot a 76 and a 68, his best score this season. Dustin Thompson finished the two day affair shooting a 77 and a 70 for three over par. Unfortunately the other Jaguars were not as fortunate as Alex Scott finished with 76 and 74 for six over par. Sophomore Ervin Nixon shot a 75 and an 82 to end at 13 over par. Romer Alcala had a tough day completing the tournament with an 82 and an 80 for 18 over par. "The Grambling tournament was tough on everyone as they were also preparing for midterms," said Williams. "We have some two more tournaments left so we look to do finish strong."
