LADY JAGUARS TENNIS TRAVELS TO AUSTIN, TEXAS

LADY JAGUARS TENNIS TRAVELS TO AUSTIN, TEXAS
5/5/2005

Baton Rouge, LA – The Southern University Lady Jaguars tennis team earned the Southwestern Athletic Conference automatic bid by winning the SWAC women’s tennis championship. With the bid they were selected to travel to Austin, Texas to face the Lady Longhorns of the University of Texas.

“When we played the top schools this year like Tulane and LSU, we were preparing for the tournament,” said head coach Jeffery Conyers.  “I am happy about the chance to compete in the tournament and represent Jaguar nation.

Southern (12-10, 11-0 SWAC) will be playing in their fourth straight NCAA tournament. In the three previous trips they have played top teams such as the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Washington and Texas A&M University.

“We seen Texas A&M last year and they are going to be in Austin as well,” Conyers said.  “I thought they were going to put us in the Southeastern Conference but I guess the committee had other ideas.”

The one problem the Blue and Gold has is that the tournament dates are the same time as Southern University’s graduation.  Senior Isoke Perry will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science.

“We have had this problem before,” said Conyers.  “Hopefully we will be able to get the match on Saturday and Sunday instead of Friday and Saturday, because then we would be able to put her on a late flight Friday night so she can play Saturday morning.”

When asked what is his alternative plan if those changes can’t be made, he was quoted as saying, freshman Sidney Lartigue will step in and play in her spot.

The Lady Jaguars will leave on Thursday, April 12th in preparation for first round action.
