Feb. 24, 2006

The Runnin' Southern Jaguars will look to play spoiler this weekend and hopefully pull off some magic of thier own, as the Southwestern Athletic Conference hosts the 2006 SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, February 25-26 on the campus of Louisiana State University in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. Alabama State and Jackson State re the defending women's and men's champions.

All ten member institutions will be in action as student-athletes will look to claim the title of champion in a variety of track and field events. The weekend kickoffs at 9:00 am on Saturday, February 25 with the shot put, high jump and long jump. The day ends with the running of the men and women's distance medley relays.

Sunday begins with the conclusion of the field events in the morning. The track events conclude with the women and men's 4 x 400 meter relay currently scheduled to begin at 5:20 pm.

On the men's side for Southern, Kelvin Buckley, Carie Steed, A.J. Turner and Kylon Wishom are the top short sprinters, while Darnell Parker, Eric Henneghan and Anthony Lee head up the Jags middle distance and distance corps.

Buckley is the meet's defending champion at 60 meters, winning last year's short sprint in a time of 6.84 seconds.

On the women's side, Coach Johnny Thomas returns much of the sprints and hurdles corps that propelled the Lady Jaguars to the SWAC outdoor title last May.

Forming the nucleus of the solid group are Kaisha Weeks, Precious Collins, Pam Cockerham, India Anderson, Jessica Greene and Monica Robinson.

Weeks, who won the 60-meter hurdles in this meet last year in 8.71 seconds, is also a big threat in several sprint events along with Collins, Cockerham, Anderson and Greene. Robinson is a multi-events standout who is a contributor in the jumps, sprints, hurdles and pole vault.
