Former Southern University star Brian Johnson added the long
awaited and elusive Outdoor National Title to his long jumping resume', as Johnson
won the long jump Friday with a leap of 26-7 to beat world and Olympic champion
Dwight Phillips (26-6ø), with defending champion Miguel Pate (26-1‰),
the former West Feliciana High standout, finishing third.
"It went pretty good," Johnson said. "The biggest factor was the wind in my face. The crowd was great." Johnson, a native of Iowa, La., is a two-time defending ('05 & '06) USA Indoor champion in the long jump. He also is the 2003 NCAA Indoor Champion, while finishing 3rd at the 2001 & 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships. After winning the 2005 USA Indoor title, later that summer Johnson placed third at the USA Outdoor Championships with a leap of 8.09m/26-6.5. That effort qualified him for a spot on the Team USA roster for the 2005 World Outdoor Championships in Helsinki, where he barely missed qualifying for the final. Earlier that outdoor season, Johnson captured first at the Payton Jordan U.S. Open. He has also put together a top performance when he won the 2005 US Indoor title in late February. Since his third place finish at the USA Outdoor Champs Johnson posted a career-best mark of 8.33m/27 feet, 4 inches in Germany earlier that summer. Brian Johnson also won the 2006 indoor championship, his
second straight, earlier this year. Johnson was third in the outdoor meet a
year ago.
