Roger Cador's Southern University Jaguars and Mississippi Valley State were tabbed as favorites to win the West and East Division titles, as the All-SWAC Preseason team and Predicted Order of Finish were selected in voting by the league's baseball coaches and sports information directors.

In 2005, Mississippi Valley won the East Division title and Southern won the West Division and the SWAC tournament championship. Southern picked up 82 points (10 1st place votes) and Mississippi Valley collected 79 points (11 1st place votes).

The Southern Jaguars placed four players on the 2006 Preseason All-SWAC Baseball team (one 1st team and three second team). Texas Southern had four players picked, while Prairie View A&M had three players (3/0), as did Jackson State (2/1) and Miss. Valley (2/1). Grambling State had two players (1/1) along with Alcorn State (0/2). Alabama A&M had one player (0/1) picked.

SU's Brandon Revis was selected as a 1st teamer, while Joshua Kirk, Gene Filyaw,. Jr, and Darren Clark were all selected as 2nd team Preseason All-SWAC selections.
