Southern's Darren Clark and Gene Filyaw each had three RBI's and a home run, while Joshua Kirk (5-5) had his best outing of the season with a complete game at the Southern Jaguars defeated the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, 11-3 at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS in the second round of the SWAC Baseball Tournament.

The Jags used three big innings to bust open the game.

After Mississippi Valley initially opened the scoring in the third inning, SU came back to score two runs in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the night. Roydrick Merritt singled and was advanced on a Taylor Spriggs sacrifice bunt. After Demarcus Coats was hit by a pitch, Brandon Revis singled through the middle to plate Merritt. Gerard Gause then singled to right field scoring Coats.

In the fourth inning, Gene Filyaw led off the inning with a solo blast to left center. After Calvin Anderson grounded out, hot-hitting Kevin Cox doubled down the right field line, then was advanced to third on a Roydrick Merritt hit to third base. Catcher Taylor Spriggs' single to left field scored Cox. Merritt scored on a wild pitch to push the SU lead to 5-1.

The Jags would push across four insurance runs in the eighth inning to make the score 11-2.

Mississippi Valley State pushed across one run in the top of the ninth, before Kirk would slam the door to end the ballgame.

SU's Kirk went the distance allowing three runs on seven hits and walking only two batters. He struck out six Delta Devils. "Rancho", as Kirk is known on the team, pushed his career SWAC Tournament record to 3-0.
