Sheldon Jones is in his second year with the Southern University basketball program, after spending the 2004-05 season as head coach and general manager of the Cajun Pelican's (Baton Rouge) of the ABA (American Basketball Association).

Prior to coaching the Cajun Pelican's, Jones spent a short stint at Utah Valley State, as an assistant coach.

Jones got into the coaching ranks in 1996, and spent two years as an assistant at Western Nebraska under Dave Campbell. He then served for one year as an assistant coach for St. Bernard High in St. Bernard, Louisiana, closing out a very successful campaign with a one-point loss in the state championship game. He coached for one year at Porterville College in Porterville, California, under George Nessman. Jones moved to Nicholls State University, where he was an assistant coach under Ricky Broussard.

A native of Baton Rouge, Jones played as a prepster Glen Oaks High School, before going on to play his collegiate basketball at perennial Junior College power Western Nebraska (Scottsbluff, NE), and wound up his Cougar career as the second-leading assist man in school history. He went on to earn an associate's degree at Western Nebraska.

His on the court accomplishments were much of the same at Southern University at New Orleans, where he played two more years and ended up as the school's all-time assist leader and second in career steals. Jones played under Earl Hill while at Southern-New Orleans. Jones graduated with a bachelor's degree in recreation at SUNO.

He went on to play professionally for three years with the World Basketball Opportunities touring team, and for one year with the Dakota Wizards of the International Basketball Association.

Jones resides in Baton Rouge.
