Joe Proctor is in his second season at Southern University after coming over from Alabama State with head Coach Rob Spivery. Proctor spent nine season under Spivery at ASU as an assistant coach.

Prior to his tenure at Alabama State, he held an assistant position at the Universiy of Missouri at Kansas, where he spent 10 seasons.

Proctor played collegiately at Memphis State (now University of Memphis), where he was known for his rainbow jum shot and his stellar defensive play. He was tabbed Sophomore of the Year in the Missouri Valley Conference in 1969 and was awarded other league and regional honors.

After graduating from Memphis State in 1971, Proctor began coaching -- first at Catholic High School in Memphis (1971) and then at Shelby State College (1972-77). He took his 1977 Shelby State team to the Nationa Junior College Tournament.

From 1977 to 1981, Proctor was an assistant coach at Drake University before moving on to Baylor University (1981-85).

Proctor got his first taste of the NCAA when he was tabbed as an interim coach at UMKC. He led the `Roos to a 13-8 record, including the scholl's first ever win over teams in the Big Eight and the Southeastern Conference.

Proctor was an oustanding multi-sport high school athlete, and was selected as an All-State quarterback and an All-State basketball player. He also won the state championship in the decatlon, setting a record for points in the event.

Proctor has worked with the guards and big men throught his coaching career, and is knwo as a very hard working recruiter who helped land some top-notch recruits at Alabama State.

A native of Knoxville Tennessee, he was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of fame on August 5, 1994.
