Jan. 3, 2006

Box Score

PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS -- The Southern Jaguars (2-9, 1-0) used a smothering second half defense and a strong rebounding performance, along with Chris Alexander's 13 second half points, to erase a 43-38 halftime deficit in rout to a 73-65 win over Prairie View A&M on Monday night.

Senior guard Chris Alexander led SU in scoring for the 10th consecutive game, finishing the night with a game and season high 27 points. Alexander hit 9-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. He also made 6-of-7 free throws. Junior forward Deforrest Riley-Smith had his best game as a Jaguar, finishing with his first career double-double, 13 points and a team high 14 rebounds. Senior forward Peter Cipriano added 13 points and 12 rebounds, for his second double-double of the season. Senior center Jerrid Campbell chipped in 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Oscar Thompson led Prairie View A&M (3-8, 0-1) with 16 points. Anthony Oha and Chris Gaines had 11 each, and Dominique Sharpe added 10.

Southern dominated the boards in the second half, led by Riley-Smith's 10 in the half. They used the rebounding edge for a 20-5 scoring advantage on 2nd chance points, and SU outscored PVAM, 38-22 in the paint.

The win earned coach Rob Spivery his first career SWAC win since arrivaing on the bluff from Alabama State in the late spring of 2005.

The SU Jaguars take on Texas Southern University at 7:30 pm, Wednesday night on the Texas Southern campus.

The Jags can be heard on the Southern Jaguars Basketball Network, WXOK Radio AM 1460, with Chris Powers, the voice of Southern Jaguar Basketball.
