Texas Southern's Leonta Matthews' putback with 10.1 seconds left lifted the visiting TSU Tigers to a 65-64 victory over the defending SWAC champs at the FG Clark Activity Center. SU, which went 10-0 at home and won all nine of its SWAC games in the "Mini-Dome" a year ago, has already dropped two home games this season includuing Tuesday's loss. Southern led 61-55 on Javaris Bradford's jumper with 5:47 remaining, but the Jaguars didn't make another field goal. Meanwhile, SU went 3-for-8 at the free-throw line and had two turnovers. Chris Davis missed a pair of free throws with 28.1 seconds left. Southern had one last chance to win, but Steffon Wiley missed as he drove the lane and forward Douglas Scott couldn't get a putback to go, with the ball clanking off the bottom of the rim. Leading TSU (5-6, 1-0 SWAC), Jones had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Matthews added 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Chris Moore had 11 points. Southern (1-12, 0-1) got career highs of 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists from Geri Guillory, with 13 points from Steffon Wiley and 10 apiece from Deforrest Riley-Smith and Geri Guillory. |
