Southern v. Jackson State, W, 73-62 Johnson, who averages 30.3 points per game, finished with 19 points, tied for his lowest output of the season. He was 9-for-25 overall and 0-for-7 from 3-point range. Defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champ Southern (3-13, 2-2 SWAC) hung on as conference preseason favorite Jackson State (9-8, 3-1), could never muster enough to get over the hump versus the Jaguars, who never trailed in the contest. He also had a 3-pointer in what turned into an 11-2 spurt, good for a 68-58 lead with 1:13 to play.
