SOUTHERN STEAM ROLLS OVER GRAMBLING STATE

Barry Honore' led the Jags in scoring and rebounding in SU win over Grambling State.

Jan. 13, 2008

Final Stats

Freshman center, Barry Honore', scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Chris Davis added 17 points to lead Southern to a 76-56 SWAC win over arch rival Grambling State on Saturday night.

Steffon Wiley added 12 points for Southern (4-10, 2-1 SWAC), which led 44-25 at halftime and cruised to win the second half.

After Grambling (0-10, 0-3) tied the score at 2-2, Jazz Williams hit his only basket of the game -- a 3-point shot -- in the midst of a 14-1 run, to put Southern ahead for good with 16:24 left in the first half.

"I really appreciated the people coming out. It was a good basketball atmosphere here, with the pep band, the cheerleaders and the dancing team. We only have eight more home games, and hopefully we can get the same kind of crowds out for each game."
Rob Spivery, SU Head Coach

Southern was on fire from 3-point land from the outset, as SU went 11-for-25 on 3-pointers. The 11 3-pointers were a season best.

All thirteen Jaguars on the roster accumulated stats, as 12 of the 13 scored. Freshman Andre' Davis was the lone SU player to not score a point.

Chris Davis had his best game since his return to the team from a personal leave of absence, as he tallied five rebounds, two steals and one assist to go along with his 17 points. He also had a thunderous dunk on a fast break over a leaping GSU player late in the second half to ignite the largest crowd of the season, 2,621 fans on Greek Night.

"I really appreciated the people coming out," Southern coach Rob Spivery said. "It was a good basketball atmosphere here, with the pep band, the cheerleaders and the dancing team. We only have eight more home games, and hopefully we can get the same kind of crowds out for each game."

The Jaguars' biggest lead, 69-42, came on a free throw by Julius Ingram with 5:27 left.
Duran Diaz had 19 points and Anthony Williams 11 to lead Grambling.

The Southern Jaguars will host another Tiger rival -- Jackson State, on Monday evening in the Mini-Dome on the SU campus. Gametime is set for 7:30 pm.
