DALLAS (AP) -- Southern overcame an 18-point deficit in the
second half to defeat Southern Methodist 75-61 on Saturday night in the season
opener for both teams.
The Mustangs led by 18 points with nearly 19 minutes to go in the game, and led by 11 with about 12 minutes remaining. The Jaguars then went on a 13-4 run to narrow the gap and closed out the game with a 10-0 run over the final minute. Southern outscored SMU 55-32 in the second half. Chris Davis and Joe Holliday led Southern with 22 points apiece. Holliday hit 4-of-6 3-pointers, and the Jaguars made 53 percent of their 3's on the night. Steffon Wiley added 12 points.
Joseph Jack led Southern (1-0) with 12 rebounds. Papa Dia of SMU (0-1) grabbed a game-high 13 boards. He had a double-double with 11 points. Alex Malone led the Mustangs with 19 points. Jon Killen scored 15. SMU had won 11 consecutive home openers until Saturday.
