WEEKEND MEN'S BASKETBALL WRAPUP Southern 70, Prairie View A&M 63 The Jaguars (2-9) had a 44-6 advantage in bench scoring, and their reserves outscored the starting five, which produced 26 points in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Besides Wiley and Holliday, who had seven points, fellow reserve Joseph Jack scored 13 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Aaron Smith made six of 12 from 3-point range and scored 22 points for Prairie View (2-10). Derek Johnson was the other Panther in double figures with 16. Joe Holliday's 3-pointer broke a 48-48 tie with 8:16 remaining in the game, and on the next four possessions, Southern scored 12 points while holding Prairie View to five. Jack had five points and made three defensive stops, including a pair of blocked shots. Douglas Scott and Chris Davis added baskets as Southern established a 65-57 lead with two minutes left. Prairie View never came back from that run. Jazz Williams finished with 13 points, and Chris Davis added 12.
Southern 54, Texas Southern 65 Sollie Norwood scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Texas Southern to a 65-54 win over Southern on Monday night. Norwood was just 5 of 15 from the field, but hit 9 of 10 free throws. Matthew Miller added 17 points for the Tigers (3-12). Southern (2-10) was led by Chris Davis with 12 points. Both teams were plagued by poor shooting. Southern shot nearly 33 percent for the game, including just 29 percent in the second half. Texas Southern shot 35 percent for the game. The Tigers held a 30-25 lead at halftime. TSU controlled play for most of the game and led 41-34 with 11:53 to go. The Jaguars then held the Tigers scoreless on seven straight possessions, going on a 14-0 run Southern established a 48-41 advantage with 6:18 remaining. Just as quickly as the Jaguars went into the lead, they watch it slip away in an agonizing five-minute stretch. Scoring on eight straight possessions, TSU went on a 17-0 run that sent Southern down for the count.
