TURNOVERS PLAGUE JAGUARS IN LOSS TO NC CENTRAL

Final Stats

Baton Rouge -- NC Central University forced Southern's JC Lewis into five interceptions, and held the vaunted Jaguar offense scoreless through three quarters, but had to hold on late to take a stunning 27-20 upset victory tonight in AW Mumford Stadium.

With the win D-II, NC Central moves to 4-0 on the season, while the Southenr Jaguars fall to 2-2.

SU's Lewis went 27-44 for 233 yards with one touchdown and five picks. NCCU Stadford Brown finished the night 10 for 20 for 167 yards and one touchdown.

Rushing the ball, backup quarterback, CJ Byrd, led the Jags with 48 yards on six carries, and scored his first collegiate touchdown in the fourth quarter. Greg Pruitt led the Eagles with 96 yards on 13 carries and scored once.

Gerard Landry caught eight passes for 132 yards and one touchdown for Southern. Charles Futrell led NC Central with four catches for 140 yards and one touchdown.

Keidrick Bailey and Maurice Runnels each had 11 tackles to the lead Jaguar defensive unit.

The Eagles defense confused JC Lewis all night, forcing the junior QB into his worst performance in his collegiate career.

But Jags offense did find a spark in the fourth quarter, led by backup quarterback, CJ Byrd, who after scoring with his own two feet, found Gerard Landry for a 37 yard TD strike to bring Southern to within seven, at 27-20 with 1:27 left to play.

Southern tried onside kicking, but he Eagles recovered to attempt and ran out the clock for the final score of 27-20.

The Southern Jaguars will be back at home next weekend, with a key SWAC matchup versus Alabama State. Start time is 7:00 PM.
