SOUTHERN DEFEATS ALCORN STATE 15-12 WITH LAST MINUTE TOUCHDOWN

Kendrick Smith rushed for a season high 112 yards vs. ASU

Sept. 30, 2008

Final Stats

Bryant Lee's 21-yard pass to Corderious Gregory with 1:21 to play rallied Southern to win at Alcorn State in the SWAC opener for both teams.

SU took advantage of a poor Alcorn State punt as Southern took possession at the Braves' 27-yard line with 3:22 to play. It took the Jaguars just three plays to score what proved to be the game winner. Lee then passed to fullback Alvin Fosselman for the two-point conversion.

The Braves had one final chance to tie or win the game, but Southern's Justin Foster picked off Braves quarterback Tim Buckley at the Alcorn State 25 with 1:02 to play.

Alcorn State scored first midway during the second quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Taylor Richardson to take a 3-0 lead. Southern took its first lead late in the third quarter Lee's 16-yard pass to Clevan White gave the Jaguars a 7-3 lead.

Alcorn State regained the lead moments later at Buckley's 22-yard touchdown run gave the Braves a 9-7 lead with 2:22 to play in the quarter as the PAT was no good. The Braves padded their lead early in the fourth on Richardson's 21-yard field goal less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

Offensively, Southern was led by Lee's 271 passing yards and two touchdowns. Kendrick Smith rushed 16 times for 112 yards, while Silas Gibbs rushed seven times for 99 yards. Clevan White was credited with six catches for 103 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Frank Harry finished with six tackles, while Gary Chatman and Glenn Bell each had a fumble recovery and Justin Foster had an interception.
