Southern 28, Alabama A&M 33 AAMU's Gerald Stockdale passed 55 yards for a touchdown and Kelcy Luke had two shorter scoring throws to Rashad Johnson as Alabama A&M gave Southern its first defeat of the season, 33-28, Saturday to ruin the Jaguars 2007 Homecoming. Stockdale's touchdown throw to Thomas Harris was his only pass of the night for A&M, now even with Southern at 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Luke, who finished 20-for-33 with two interceptions for 226 yards and ran for 9 yards, opened scoring with a 12-yard pass to Johnson; Jeremy Licea made the extra point. The Jaguars got as close as they would all night on a 9-yard run by Darren Coates, who led the team with 82 yards on 21 carries and 99 yards on eight passes, to make the score 7-6 with 10:10 left in the first quarter. But A&M had the next three touchdowns, on a 2-yard run by Ulysses Banks, Stockdale's pass -- and Luke's 18-yard throw to Johnson, before Alvin Fossilman got Southern on the board again with a 1-yard run for a 28-14 halftime score. The Jaguars got within three points late in the fourth quarter. Bryant Lee, who also scored on a 6-yard throw to Clevan White, made his second touchdown pass at 14 yards to Gerard Landry to make it 31-28 with 4:40 left. The final margin was on Whitney Garrett's safety with 2:38 left.
Banks had 19 carries for 73 yards and caught five passes for another 64 to lead the Bulldog offensive efforts. Lee finished 24-for-39 with 219 yards for Southern; Gerard Landry had 10 catches for 98 yards. Defensively for the Jags, Glenn Bell finished with 10 tackles (6 solo, 4 assists) along with an interception and a pass deflection. Vincent Lands finished the evening with nine tackles (3 solo, 6 assists) to go with one sack, two and a half tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries. Efe Osawemwenze had eight tackles (4 solo, 4 assists), one pass interception and one pass deflection. |
