PUGH EARNS 200TH WIN

Head Coach Sandy Pugh holds up her plague recognizing her 200th win.

Jan. 13, 2008

Baton Rouge, LA -- In her 300th game as a head coach Sandy Pugh earned her 200th career victory by routing Southwestern Athletic Conference rival the Grambling State University Lady Tigers 75-46.

Southern (4-8, 2-1) also won their second straight for the first time this season. Red-shirt senior Fredrieka Lewis enjoyed her best game of the year scoring 20 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, blocking four shots and stealing away two passes. This was her first double double game since February 13, 2006 versus Mississippi Valley. In the game the Beaumont, Texas native ended the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

"We're putting the pieces together," Lewis said. "Hopefully, this carries over to the rest of the season."

Red-shirt freshman Freda Allen finished the game with 11 rebounds and sevens points while senior Indi Johnson, and junior Diedra Jackson each completed the game with 10 points.

"I think it's the best we've played, but we're not sharp," said Pugh. "We're not where I want to see us play. We have to continue to grow. They have to understand one thing: When we put the hammer down, we're going forward."

The victory was coach Pugh's 124th at Southern in her 130th SWAC game. It also was her 215th game on "the bluff".

The Blue and Gold will welcome the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University on Monday, January 14th. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the F. G. Clark Activity Center on the campus of Southern University.
