Diedra Jackson scored a jaw dropping 34 point Monday night vs. Alabama State University, but that wasn't enough as the Southern University women's basketball team dropped their second straight game 71-78. Southern (10-14, 8-7 SWAC) had not seen a Jaguar score in the 30's since Rolanda Monroe did it against Jackson State University on February 6, 2006. Jackson's 34 is her career best. The former All-State star also totaled four rebounds and two steals in the game. "Our posts killed us," head coach Sandy Pugh said. "They never established their blocks at all. Deidra did a single-handed job of getting it into overtime with the scrambling we were doing, but the bottom line is Fredrieka and Indi have to score." Red-shirt freshman Freda Allen secured her spot in the SU women's record book by recording 12 rebounds in the game. It was her 13th game of the year with double digit rebounds. Her tally for the year thus far is 215 and that places her 13th on the single season rebounds lists. The Lake Providence, La native also scored seven points. The two losses in Alabama drop the Blue and Gold to fourth in the SWAC standings.
Southern will try to recover from the defeats when they face the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University on Saturday, March 1st. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. and will be played on the campus of Alcorn State.
