The Southern University women's basketball team fell to the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University 58-56 on Saturday, March 1st. Fortunately the lost does not hurt the Jags as they remain in fourth place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings. "It's a gut check," said head coach Sandy Pugh. "It's been a gut check. It comes down to effort and intensity. These kids are capable of giving more. We're at 35 percent, and that's disappointing. "It's definitely a frustration point. Where do we go from here? Who wants to be that person? Who wants to bring that energy?" Southern (10-15, 8-8 SWAC) was led by junior Diedra Jackson who totaled 16 points, four steals three rebounds, two assists and two blocks. This was the former Amite high school star's ninth game leading the team in scoring and 14th double digit scoring contest. This is also Jackson's fourth straight game with double digit points. Senior Indi Johnson recorded 17 points in the game and also collected 10 rebounds for her second double double of the year.
The Blue and Gold has two home games remaining on their 2007-2008 schedule. The Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M University will visit on Thursday, March 6th. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the F. G. Clark Activity Center. Texas Southern University will visit on Saturday, March 8th for a 2:00 contest.
