SOUTHERN SOFTBALL FINISHES 3-2 ON THE WEEKEND



Assistant Coach Wilbert Early led the Lady Jaguars to a 3-2 weekend record

Hammond, LA -- The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team finished the Southeastern Lions Classic picking up three wins and two losses. The wins came against Alcorn State University 4-2, Jackson State University 10-3, and tournament host Southeastern Louisiana 10-2. The losses came against Northern Colorado 5-3 and Tennessee-Martin 2-5.

Over the week-end SU put up 29 runs, 46 hits and 19 RBI's. They also had 7 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs, and 10 stolen bases total for all five games.

In the first game the Lady Jaguars defeated Alcorn 4-2. Senior Samisha Bledsoe recorded a career high 11 strikeouts. Junior Brittany Jefferson went 2-3 with 2 runs scored. Freshman Denean Woods finished the game 2-2 with a run. Sophomore Tiffany Darville and senior Jayme Roberts each had a RBI in the game. At the plate Bledsoe scored a run and batted in a run.

On Saturday, in the first game of the day, the Lady Jaguars faced Tennessee-Martin and dropped their first game of the year 5-2. The Blue and Gold jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning but Tennessee- Martin struck back in the bottom of the fourth reeling out 5 runs to take the lead and the game. Senior Jamila Taylor picked up the lost but went 1-2 from the plate and scored a run. Courtney Chappell scored the second run in the game for SU. Tiffany Darville knocked in both runs for 2 RBI's.

In the third game of the tournament and second on the day, the Lady Jaguars dropped their second straight 5-3 to Northern Colorado. The game had to go to extra innings as Colorado took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Southern's Woods and sophomore Brittany Richardson scored in the bottom of the third to pull within one run. Woods then scored another run in the bottom of the fifth off of a Jayme Roberts hit. With the score tied 3-3 at the bottom of the seventh inning the game went into extra innings with Colorado getting first hit and scoring two runs to take the lead and the game. Roberts picked up her first lost of the season while finishing with the only RBI of the game.

On the final day of the tournament the Lady Jaguars faced Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Jackson State. The Blue and Gold picked up their second win of the year by defeating JSU 10-3. Freshman Jennifer Hodrick recorded her first win of her collegiate career. Junior Candice Stevens finished the game with 3 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBI's. Courtney Chappell went 2-3 from the plate with 2 runs scored and one RBI.

In the nightcap, versus SLU, Candice Stevens and Courtney Chappell each homered in a six-run second inning to help SU pick up their third victory on the year. Pitcher Samisha Bledsoe held Southeastern to three hits to earn the victory. Denean Woods finished the game 3-3 from the plat with 3 runs scored. Stevens ended the game with 2 runs and 3 RBI's. Chappell completed the game with 3RBI's and one run. Tennessee-Martin won the tournament, finishing the weekend with a 5-0 mark. Southeastern, Northern Colorado and Southern tied for second place with each team posting a 3-2 record at the tournament.

Southern opens up their home schedule on Tuesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day. They will welcome Louisiana College in doubleheader scrimmage action. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 p.m.
