LADY JAGUARS FINISH WEEKEND 3-2

Freshman Chastoni Jones finished the tournament batting .313.

Feb. 24, 2008

Lake Charles, LA - The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team finish their second weekend of tournament play 3-2 to improve their overall record to 8-5.

The Lady Jaguars opened the McNeese State University softball tournament versus Houston Baptist University. Sophomore Megan Hodge gave up eight hits and five runs to allow HBU to pull off a 5-3 victory. Freshman Kesha Tauriac ended the game with a run and a RBI.

The second game of the day saw SU up against tournament host the Cowgirls. Freshman Brittany Gillenwater gave up eight hits and six runs before being pulled for Hodge. The Atlanta, Texas native did not fair so well in her relief as she gave up two hits and two runs to allow McNeese to take the final game on the first day of the Cowgirls tournament 8-2. Sophomore Jasmine Williams went 3 for 3 with a run and a hit.

The second day of the Lake Charles, Louisiana expedition saw the Lady Jaguars with a chance of redemption as they face the same two opponents they saw on the first. Up first was Houston Baptist. HBU saw a 2-1 lead after three end in a 6-2 lost. Sophomore transfer Lanaya Jenkins 17 ground outs and two strikeouts kept Houston Baptist at bay and allowed the Blue and Gold offense to take control scoring five runs in the final four innings to take a 6-2 win and their first in the Cowgirl tourney.

The second game of the day saw SU with a chance at the host school. After eight innings and over two hours of play the Southern pulled off the upset and gave McNeese State a 10-9 lost and their first defeat in their tournament.

The final game for SU saw them paired against fellow SWAC foe Texas Southern University. Just like they've done in the past three seasons The Lady Jaguars defeated the Lady Tigers 4-1. Brittany Gillenwater earns her second victory of the year with her six strikeouts and six groundouts in the game. Freshman Robyn Cathy led the Blue and Gold finishing 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI's.

Southern opens up at home on Friday, February 29th at 1:00 pm when they host Alcorn State University to a double header. The game will be played at Lady Jaguar Field which is located on the campus of Southern University. The game is free and open to the public.
