LADY JAGUARS SOFTBALL HOST SWAC CONTEST



Courtney Chappell is currently leading the team with a .364 batting average.

Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team will host their first Southwestern Athletic Conference contests of the year when they welcome the 2006 SWAC tournament runner-ups the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University.

Southern (6-10, 2-1 SWAC) took two out of three in their first SWAC match of the year when they visited the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M University in Houston, Texas.

Currently leading the Blue and Gold is junior Courtney Chappell with a batting average of .364 with 16 hits, nine runs, four doubles and a triple. Freshman Brittany Hymes, who is enjoying a stellar first year, is second with a .357 batting average with 15 hits, five runs and a double. Rounding out the top three is another first year player, Jasmone Williams, who has recorded 13 hits, six runs, six doubles, a triple and a homerun. Participating in her final campaign on "the bluff" is senior Brittany Jefferson who is batting .314 with 11 hits, three runs and four doubles.

Leading the Lady Jags on the mound is freshman Megan Hodge who has totaled a 3.65 era with a 5-1 record. The Louisiana native has completed all six games and has totaled 58 strikeouts.

The first game in the three-game set will be played on Friday, March 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at Lady Jaguar Field on the campus of Southern University. The final two contests will be played on Saturday, March 24th at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. Admission is free for all games
