SOUTHERN WINS WESTERN DIVISION

Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team claimed their third straight Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division championship after sweeping the University Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions this past weekend.

Southern (24-22, 17-7 SWAC) finishes the season on a four-game win streak after defeating the Lady Lions in four games. The Lady Jaguars will use the mid-week contest to tune their selves up before they travel to Itta Bena, Mississippi for the 2006 SWAC softball tournament which begins on Thursday, April 27th with first round action.

The Lady Jags have been lead this season by senior Jamila Taylor who is batting .368 with 15 runs, 32 hits, 22 runs batted in, eight doubles, a triple and a home run. The Hanford, California also leads the team in the pitching category with a 2.73 earned runs average. She also has pitched in 102.1 innings and recorded 58 strikeouts in 22 appearances. Taylor (7-7) has seen the majority of the action in the circle for the Blue and Gold this season. Samisha Bledsoe (5-5, 2.96 ERA) and Jayme Roberts (5-5, 3.56 ERA) are the other top pitchers on the SU staff.

Southeastern leads the all-time series between the two schools, 18-2. The Lady Jaguars have won the last two meetings, including a 10-2 victory earlier this season.
