Houston, TX -- The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball lost to the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University 7-4 in semifinal action in the 2008 SWAC softball tournament. The Blue and Gold then played Alcorn State University in the loser's bracket and defeated the Lady Braves 5-1 to advance to their second straight championship game. Southern (27-17) scored the first two runs of the game and enjoyed momentum in the first two innings. The Devilettes then scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the score to 2-1. The third inning was not kind for SU as Valley score six runs of off two hits and an error to take a 7-2 lead. SU scored two runs in the top of the fifth but could not manage to produce any more losing their first game in the 2008 SWAC tournament. The lost meant they had to play in the next game against the Lady Braves to see who would come out of the loser bracket to play in the championship game. Alcorn scored a run in bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Southern put their first two runs on the board in the top of the second then scored a run in the top of the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead and the victory. The win puts the Lady Jaguars back in the SWAC softball championship contest for the fourth time in five years. They will seek their first win over the Devilettes as Valley has won all four meetings.
The game is scheduled for 12:00 pm and will be played on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.
