SU ADVANCES TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

SU ADVANCES TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
4/30/2005

Itta Bena – The Southern University softball team advanced to the 2005 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship today by defeating the tournament host and 2004 SWAC champs the Mississppi Valley State University Devilettes.

“Our main goal is take it one game at a time,” said head coach Nancy Marshall.  “I’m definitely happy we won today and look forward to tomorrow’s championship.”

Southern (31-10, 21-3 SWAC) tied their 1999 record for the best record in Southern softball history.  The Lady Jaguars were lead by Junior Jamila Taylor.  Taylor pitched a complete game and allowed 6 hits and earned 1 run while striking out 4.  She also went 1-3 from the plate and scored 2 runs. Freshman Tiffany Darville finished the game 2-3 and drove in 2 RBI’s.

Southern will play Mississippi Valley in the SWAC softball championship game on Sunday, May 1st at 12:00 p.m.  Valley defeated Prairie View A&M University in the final loser bracket game after Prairie View eliminated Texas Southern in the 10:30 game today.  All the Blue and Gold has to do is win one game but Mississippi Valley has to win two games in order to claim the championship because they dropped their semifinal game to the Lady Jaguars.

This is SU’s second straight SWAC softball championship game.  They lost last year’s finals to Mississippi Valley 3-2.
