5/1/2005 Itta Bena, MS --- The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University repeated as softball champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a two game sweep (4-0, 5-3 ) of the Lady Jaguars of Southern University. Southern (31-12, 21-3 SWAC) went into the game as the favorite only needing to win one game while Valley had to win two games because of the lost to SU in the semifinal game. In the first game MVSU’s Jalana Brown did the work as she struck out seven and allowed two hits to complete the game and the shut out 0-4. In the second game the Lady Jaguars finally found the offense niche that they had all season long. Down 0-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning sophomore Brittany Jefferson ripped a singled into left field that scored senior Cashara Edgerson. With two outs freshman Brittany Richardson step up to the plate and belted a single into right field that got past the fielder and scored Jefferson and freshman Courtney Chappell to make it 3-4. Valley put the nail in the coffin with a run in the top of the seventh inning to move the score to 3-5 and take their second straight SWAC softball championship. The Lady Jaguars and Valley lead the way with three All tournament team members:
