SOUTHERN SOFTBALL PLACES THREE ON
6/13/2005 Baton Rouge, LA – The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team placed three members of their Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division championship squad on the All-Louisiana second team. “We’ve seen one or no players on the All-Louisiana
team before so to have three on there is an accomplishment,” said head coach
Nancy Marshall. “I am really proud for
the young ladies. We are starting to get the recognition as a solid softball team
by playing stiffer competition.” Brittany Richardson was recognized as a catcher. She batted .362 to finish fourth on the team
and ninth in the SWAC. As the Lady
Jaguars leadoff batter she scored 39 times, batted in 23 runs, hit nine doubles
and three homeruns. Jayme
Roberts was recognized at shortstop even though she played third base most of
the year. The versatile player hit .348 for
the season to place seventh in the SWAC.
Roberts finished the year with 20 runs, 32 hits, 27 RBI’s, 11 doubles
and five homeruns. As a pitcher she
recorded four wins with 23 strike outs. Candice
Stevens picked up honors as the designated player. She batted .427 to finish first on the team
and in the SWAC. She ended her sophomore
year with 28 runs, 47 hits (Tied 6th in SWAC), 39 RBI’s (2nd
in SWAC), nine doubles and 7 homeruns (2nd in SWAC). During the year Stevens was named SWAC Player
of the Week three times and was named to the 2005 SWAC softball All-Tournament
team. Softball
playing schools in the state had athletes nominated by the school sports
information contacts and then a panel of LSWA members voted on the final team
based on regular season statistical information. 2005 FIRST TEAM SECOND TEAM Honorable Mention -- 3B --
